As a pioneer in the research field of nutrition in China, the department has been authorized to award master’s degrees in Nutrition and Food Hygiene since 1986 and to award the doctoral degree since 2003. With the rapid growth of this department, four leading and reputable research areas have been formed: nutrition and chronic disease prevention, maternal and child nutrition, public nutrition and health, and food safety risk assessment. Due to the uniqueness and reputation in nutrition and health research, the department was evaluated as a Key Discipline of Guangdong Province in 2007 and was authorized to build the Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Food, Nutrition and Health in 2009. Nutrition and Food Hygiene was evaluated as a ‘school excellent course’ in 2007.
