The Department of Nutrition was established in 1997 to bring together the former Department of Medical Nutrition and the Department of Nutrition and Food Hygiene.


Currently, we have eleven staff members, including eight professors and three associate professors. Our department is comprised of distinguished researchers and teachers with five doctoral supervisors and four masters’ supervisors, among whom seven have PhD degrees. There is one winner of the National Outstanding Youth Science Fund; one teacher enjoying State Special Allowance; one supervisor of the National One Hundred Excellent Doctoral Dissertations; one national prominent teacher; one winner of National Excellent Doctoral Dissertations; two winners of Guangdong Provincial Excellent Doctoral Dissertations; and one teacher selected for the National Thousand-hundred-ten Project.


As a pioneer in the research field of nutrition in China, the department has been authorized to award master’s degrees in Nutrition and Food Hygiene since 1986 and to award the doctoral degree since 2003. With the rapid growth of this department, four leading and reputable research areas have been formed: nutrition and chronic disease prevention, maternal and child nutrition, public nutrition and health, and food safety risk assessment. Due to the uniqueness and reputation in nutrition and health research, the department was evaluated as a Key Discipline of Guangdong Province in 2007 and was authorized to build the Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Food, Nutrition and Health in 2009. Nutrition and Food Hygiene was evaluated as a ‘school excellent course in 2007.


In the past five years, focusing on the construction of the Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Food, Nutrition and Health, the department has been awarded more than 50 research grants, including two Eleventh Five-Year Technology Support Projects; one Key Project of the Natural Science Foundation of China; seventeen projects of the Natural Science Foundation of China; four projects of the Doctoral Fund of the Ministry of Education; one CMB Project; one subproject of National 973 Plan; nine projects of the Provincial Natural Science Foundation; and three Provincial Science Technology Projects. Our faculty members have published over 300 academic papers in domestic and international journals. The research accomplishments of the department have gained the first prize in the Guangdong Provincial Science Technology Award; the first prize in Natural Science of University Scientific Research Achievement Award; the second prize in the Chinese Medical Science Technology Award; and the second prize in the Nutrition Science Technology Achievement Award from the Chinese Society of Nutrition. Meanwhile, the department has participated in the drafting and revision of the “Chinese Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs)” of macronutrients, vitamins, minerals, trace elements, and phytochemicals. Teachers from the department have edited Preventive Medicine, Clinical Nutrition, Human Nutrition, and been associate editors of Nutrition and Food Hygiene, and the Volume of Nutrition and Food Hygiene in the Chinese Medical Encyclopedia.


The department is now in charge of teaching basic and professional courses for students majoring in Preventive Medicine, Clinical Medicine, Nursing, and other disciplines. The courses include Nutrition and Food Hygiene, Clinical Nutrition, Maternal and Child Nutrition, Human Nutrition, Food Science, Cooking, Food Toxicology, Community Nutrition and Food Hygiene, Chinese Diet Culture, Nutrition for Diseases, and Preventive Medicine among others.
