Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Food, Nutrition and Health

The Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Food, Nutrition and Health was established in 2009. Professor Wenhua Ling, head of Foreign Affairs Office of Sun Yat-sen University, is now director and academic leader of the Laboratory. Researcher Xiaoguang Yang, from the National Institute for Nutrition and Food Safety, Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, is director of the academic board. The Laboratory, with an area of 2000 square meters, is equipped with numerous large-scale instruments and equipment and with an impeccable nutrition analysis platform. The research team is comprised of 40 regular members, in which there are 26 professors and associate professors; two winners of the National Outstanding Youth Science Fund; two experts enjoying the State Council Special Allowance; one Pearl River Scholar; and three New Century Excellent Talents approved by the Ministry of Education. The academic background of this team covers Nutrition, Food Hygiene, Epidemiology, Toxicology, Biochemistry, Bioinformatics, and many additional disciplines. The main task of the Laboratory is carrying out nutrition application and basic research. At the same time, the Laboratory, which aims at solving important needs in national population and health and following international research fronts of nutrition, is also launching systemic and prospective research in the area of food, nutrition, and health.

The current focus of the laboratory is to research nutritional demands and intervention measures in accordance with the genetic characteristics, life style, and habits of the Chinese population, providing scientific evidence for national nutrition and health policy-making. At the present, the research directions involve: (1) nutrition, food, and chronic disease control and prevention and related mechanisms research; (2) a nutritional requirement study; (3) the health effects of hazardous substances in food and the construction of a risk assessment platform. Since 2009, the Laboratory has undertaken numerous important projects including the “National 973 Plan;” Key Programs of the Natural Science Foundation of China; and  Key Programs of the Natural Science Foundation of Guangdong Province. The main research results have been published in various international journals, such as Hepatology; Circulation Research; Diabetes Care; the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition; Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism; Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology; Free Radical Biology and Medicine; Journal of Lipid Research; and the Journal of Biological Chemistry. At the same time, the research results have received first prize in the Ministry of Education’s Natural Science Award, first prize in the Guangdong Science Technology Award, and the Laboratory has also received two patents for invention.
