Established in 2001, the Faculty of Preventive Medicine was formed by the merger of the former teaching and research departments of Occupational Health and Occupational Medicine, Hygienic Toxicology, Environmental Health, Hygienics, and Hygienic Chemistry. At present there are 16 faculty members in this Faculty including five professors, five associate professors, five lecturers, and one full-time teaching staff member, of whom three are doctoral supervisors and eight are master's supervisors. In terms of development, the discipline of Toxicology was graded as a Key Discipline of Guangdong Province and National Key Discipline in 2007, and was listed as an Excellent School-level Course in 2008. The Toxicology Laboratory became a key lab of the "Environmental Pollution and Risk Assessment" launched by Guangzhou Municipal Bureau of Scientific technology and Informatics in 2015.
Currently, the Faculty of Preventive Medicine offers courses for students of 5-year, 7-year and 8-year programs, international students, all-in-English classes, and graduate students covering such subjects as Occupational Health and Occupational Medicine, Fundamental Toxicology, Environmental Health, Hygienic Analytical Chemistry, Environmental Medicine, Research Progress in Preventive Medicine, Systematic Toxicology, Research Progress in Modern Toxicology, Toxicology Theory and Technology, Environmental Physiology, Sanitary Regulations, Sanitary Inspection, Hygienic Microbiology, Preventive Medicine, and Hygiene.
Currently, the faculty has instituted four steady and characteristic research fields: Genetic Toxicology, Molecular Toxicology, Biochemical Toxicology, and Environmental Toxicology. Recently, the Department faculty have presided over more than 40 projects, among which three were supported by the Key Program of National Natural Science Foundation of China; three by subtopic of the State Key Development Program for Basic Research of China (973); two by the National High Technology Research and Development Program of China (863); one by the Program of National Natural Science Funds for Distinguished Young Scholar; twelve by the National Natural Science Foundation of China. Additionally, members of our faculty published the textbook, Fundamental Toxicology (the 7th edition) and the textbook, Procedures and Techniques on Toxicology Experiments as the chief editors and co-editors, and co-edited the Textbook of Occupational Health and Occupational Medicine (the 7th edition), and Environmental Health (the 7th edition). In addition to six academic monographs, more than 300 theses have also been published in national and international journals. Additionally, a Second Prize for Province-level Teaching Achievement of Guangdong Province and a Second Prize for Teaching Achievement of Sun Yat-sen University have been awarded to our Faculty.
